Autumn is starting (here in the US, anyway) and kids are heading back to school. Does the changing season change your reading habits? Less time? More?
Are you just in the mood for different kinds of books than you were over the summer?
The change of seasons do call for a change in my reading habits. When I was still in the classroom, this time of year was so hectic that I couldn't find a spare minute to read for pleasure, although I sure read plenty for work. Now that I'm retired, I am enjoying the luxury of spending a chunk of time reading each day. Therefore, this Autumn presents no change in time allotment for me.
This past summer, I wanted to read what I call "froo-froo" books--sugar candy for the brain. Summer seems to call for a more playful read. However, I'm in the mood for intriguing mysteries now.
Do the change of seasons affect your reading habits?

I'm so envious! I wish I could retire now and do all the things I want, LOL.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my reading depends more on my moods rather than the changing season/weather.
Yup, same here. Like Melody, my reading depends on my mood too.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday and Happy BTT Sally :)
I agree - mysteries are more appealing in the autumn (and winter). :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you can relate. I do less reading this time of year. I just started a Stephen King book the other day and I'm lucky if I can get 10 pages in before falling asleep!
ReplyDeletetake care,
Dawn
I have yet to read a good mystery, maybe I will this fall :) Thank You for visiting my blog today :)

I would never trade my wonderful children and busy phase of life right now, but I confess to a twinge of envy at the thought of the freedom of retirement! :-)
ReplyDeleteSally, you are up early this morning. I adore reading all types of books and the season does change what I read. Summer is for fast books. Light reading that is not to involved. Fall and winter gives me the urge to get into a book that take lots of time to read. Novels with history or just something to read for my mind.
ReplyDeleteYesterday, you said that blogging friends can become your dear and close friends. I agree with that.
Reading my comments is the best read for each day. Have a great day.
Hugs, Jeanne
Back again Sally to correct the word (to)
ReplyDelete'too involved' I hate bad errors in writing. Smile!
Jeanne
Since I'm in school full time, I can't really do any reading for fun..I really miss it! My texts are all I get to read when the semesters are going!
ReplyDeleteIt seems that for the past 7 years or so I've been stuck in "romance" mode with books. Although, I do step out of that realm once in a while for a good mystery, but usually only when it's J.D. Robb writing it!
ReplyDeleteJustine :o )
Hi Sally,
ReplyDeleteI haven't done much reading lately...too busy and too much time on the computer. I like your book review blog...I'm going to have to spend some time there.
I found someone else whose reading is also effected by the change of weather! I thought I was the only one :)

Good morning Sally
ReplyDeleteI wish I was retired and could enjoy more reading. Right now I'm not getting to it as readily as I'd like to. I'm still struggling through the same books I've been reading for a while, can you imagine...but they are books that you can read as you have time.
I don't think the seasons change my reading interests...
Have a lovely day
Judi
Yum. I would love more time for reading. I'm definitely influenced more by my mood, though, than anything else. Well, moods and deadlines. :)

ummmmm...I, too, love a good mystery. Nothing I love more than to not have somewhere I need to be, it's either rainy or snowing outside, Bill makes a delicious fire in the wood burning stove I love, fix myself a great snack and some hot tea, sweet, of course, sit down in my blue chair, prop my feet on the ottoman and open up a FABULOUS book...love story is right down my alley....a great who-donnit...never, NEVER, history books, tho!!
ReplyDeletelove, bj
I could only hope for retirement...oh the things I could read! In the meantime though, I find that I gravitate towards the classics. Perhaps it's the eternal student in me.
ReplyDeleteYou can see my answer to BTT here!
I didn't think so but I did just started a bible study and a book on prayer. I thought it was due to the new series at church but maybe the season is playing a role as well!
ReplyDeleteLOL froo froo reads. I've never done beach reads.

You're right, Sally. Summer calls for more playful reading. :)
ReplyDeleteI am in the mood for fantasy stories at the moment...
It seems like I am reading more mysteries now and enjoying them. I hope you have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteI didn't do the BTT this week as my reading doesn't really change from season to season. I do like to look u seasonal quotes and poems, but my book reading goes by what's out and what I am interested in rather than the season.
ReplyDeleteFor a really excellent mystery, I recommend The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's brand new and absolutely fantastic.
ReplyDeleteGood answer! And you're right - summer does tend to call for all of the "beach reads" types of books.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same as you. I'm now more in the mood for mysteries in books -- and film!
ReplyDeleteHappy fall.
Thanks for visiting my blog. As you know, I answered similarly. I rarely read chick-lit except during the summer, I don't know why. I guess that qualifies as froo froo. :)
ReplyDeleteI was in the classroom all summer so I read almost nothing but Russian literature. Fall is a change of "color" and I can have more time to read for comfort, but in general, my taste doesn't change.
ReplyDeleteSince I don't have to study anymore, seasonal changed don't really affect my reading.
ReplyDeleteThe only reading I am able to do now is on this computer ! I am staying on here way too much.
ReplyDeleteNah....I can read any type of book during any season! :) Happy Thursday!
ReplyDeleteI don't care what the season is. If I can find time to read, I am happy and it does not matter what the book is. Someone left a book at our cabin this summer and I brought it home, and can hardly put it down. It's a romance novel, but it's really good.
ReplyDeleteYes! "Intriguing mysteries" are perfect for the fall. Of course, I like a good whodunit any time of year.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy mysteries all the time,if a book crosses my path it gets read all except the mushy lovey stuff, I have no use for the harlequins, but to each their own taste.
ReplyDeleteI read a lot !!
Diane
I really have to be in the right mood to enjoy a good mystery. How wonderful that you have more time to read now!
ReplyDeleteHi Sally, I enjoy reading more in the cooler months , when I can curl up in bed , under the covers and enjoy reading myself to sleep..I just finished reading " The Twenty wishes' a fast and easy book to read..I will check out your choices of books and try reading some of them..
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by my place today and wishing my husband a happy birthday..I will show him your greeting when he comes home from work..
Take care, hugs.. Baba
I never really noticed that there was a difference in my reading habits with the changing seasons. However, movies for me are quite seasonal. I love the old black and white mystery, love story type movies during the cooler months and the fast paced action packed movies during the summer.
ReplyDeleteCompletely off the subject...sort of
I agree - summer is for fun reads! Thanks for stopping by my blog. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree - we do have the same opinions about summer/fall reads...thanks for visiting my blog!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's the opposite for me. Autumn brings time restraints, but my book selection isn't all that different.

Hello Sal; I am with you on the changing of seasons. I find that my life style changes with each one. What I eat and craft and drink and read and things like that. I am into mysteries too. Thanks for the comment and visit. you are a sweet gal Sal.
ReplyDeletehave a great Friday;
Hugs;
Alaura
Is it bad to congrats someone for their retirement? Oh how I envy you that you get to do all the things you want now.
ReplyDeleteI wish you to enjoy more luxury times on your reading and whatever else you want to do :)
Oh I wish that I had more time to read. My boss is trying to stretch more hours into my day. (I guess I should be thankful that I have a job these days.) I love a good true crime book or a happy go lucky romance. I usually pick up the latest find from the endcap of Target. Some Sunday afternoons Jacob and I hang out at Barnes & Nobles or Borders and scour through books and eat cake! ~ Robyn

ReplyDeleteI must admit when I was teaching I didn't have as much time as I do now for reading for pleasure - despite the fact that I was an English teacher!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog ;0)
Moods affect me more! Not seasons!
ReplyDeleteLOL!
Thanks again for commenting on my BTT answer. I checked out your other blog and commented there too.
ReplyDeleteI don't really get affected by the seasons when it comes to reading choices, but indeed, summer seems more appropriate for light reading. :D
ReplyDeleteMy fall reading habits definitely reflect my university days. I tend to set aside the romances and chick lit that I love to read in the summer, and go for more socially relevant topics and historical stuff. I've just finished a great disaster thriller, Tsunami by Gordon Gumpertz that's filled with lots of interesting sub plots, good villains, and suspense.
