Booking Through Thursday - Movie Potential

If you would like to join in, click here.

Today's question:
Tami inspired this week’s question:

What book do you think should be made into a movie? And do you have any suggestions for the producers?

Or, What book do you think should NEVER be made into a movie?

My Response:
My mind clouds with plots, characters, and titles. There are so many good books, and any good book would make a good film. Of course, a film would have to cut some good parts and characters; after all, that is why a book is superior to a film! I can't list all the possibilities, so I'll give one example of a recent book that would make a fun film.

Last Mango in Texas by Ray Blackston is written in first person narrative, and this humorous Christian chick lit couples an oil man with an environmentalist. That's creativity! The Texas man, Kyle, and the tree-hugging Gretchen are strong characters who pull apart toward their own special interests while being drawn together romantically.

Imagine an escape from a fraternity during a frat party. How could it happen with the brothers watching? What background music will be playing? Ah, you'll have to read the book--or see the movie--to see the answers those questions. If you're interested in a FREE copy, check my sidebar.

What title did you suggest?

  1. Shortly after I began reading the Janet Evanovich series about Stephanie Plum, I thought they would make a hilarious movie series. At the time, I pictured Sandra Bullock as Stephanie and someone similar to Estelle Getty as Grandma Mazur.

I had heard long ago that Hollywood was considering a movie but I don't remember which studio, director or producers were involved. When I heard Cameron Diaz' name mentioned as Stephanie, I was disappointed. I don't care for Cameron Diaz, but beyond that, she just doesn't fit the physical description of the character.

Anyone else feel that way about well defined characters when the movie doesn't come close? Denzel Washington is a marvelous actor, but when he was cast as Lincoln Rhyme in The Bone Director, I was shocked. He looks nothing like the Lincoln described in the book.

  2. Good morning Sally, I had a good laugh over your remark on my post this AM. I went right over to Beverly's and was very amused at both of our posts.

I am not able to come up with a book movie idea. Most of my favorite books have already become movies. While writing this I did think of a book that would be a possible good movie after all. Did you ever read 'Green Darkness' by Anya Seton? I read it many years ago and it has been one of my favorite stories all these years.

    Busy day, Gotta run.

    Hugs...Jeanne

  3. Good morning, Mizz Sally,
I am like Jeanne...most of the great books I've read have already been turned into a movie. I am so so saddened to say that I have not read nearly as much as I used to...before I stumbled into the town of BLOGVILLE.!! shame on me but...what's a girl to do??
    Have a wonderful day,
    bj

  4. Sally, I think we have movies in the making right here on the blog circuit! But I would love to see a history of the Battle of 1812, specifially based on Robert Rimini's book about Andrew Jackson in that war and the Battle of New Orleans. I think he is the quintessential historian. He makes history come alive, and I could see it being played out onscreen. I think the Civil War is overdone. I am much more interested in the Revolution and in the Federal Period.

What can I say? I'm a history channel kind of girl! ;-)

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  5. Morning, Dear Sallyness! I haven't read that book. But I certainly take your word for it, because you are the all knowing one.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  6. I didn't answer this as I am usually disappointed in movie adaptations of books. The Lord of the Rings and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe were exceptions.

I read one of Ray Blackston's books after seeing him on a "meet the authors" panel at a Christian bookstore. It was quite funny. I'd like to read some more of his, if I ever get my TBR pile whittled down.

  9. I'd say my answer is the opposite. I think I've told you that I'm a huge Stephen King fan... Well, I hate the movies that are made off of his books. Most of them anyway..I have seen a couple I liked but I wouldn't say loved. They are always different than the book. They don't follow his books well at all. So...I prefer to read Stephen King rather than watch him. Happy Thursday Sally ♥

  10. I'd love if they work make Jane Eyre into a movie. They did a British Mini-series once, but I've never seen it in a movie. It would be great.

    *hugs*

  11. Good Morning Miss Sally, Well that does sound like a good movie for sure!
Do you have any ideas of who should play the part of Gretchen and Kyle?

  12. Note to ShimmyMom, in 1996 William Hurt played Mr. Rochester and there was a 1944 version with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine.

I agree with Knitty's comments about the Stephanie Plum novels. I'd love to see who would play Joe Morelli and Ranger.

  16. I often read a book and think it would make a great movie and then I remember how Hollywood butcherd other books I loved! *smile*

But some were actually good...I need to think about these questions!

    Love,
    Sue

  17. I am trying to think hard here Sally. Lately I have been reading a lot of self help books so I guess I could easily star in my own movie. ;-)

Sometimes when I am reading a book, vsualizing the characters helps. I keep up with the "alphabet" mysteries by Sue Grafton and I always see Sandra Bullock playing the role of Kinsey Milhone.

Anyway, my novel reading has been quite sporadic as of late so I am at a loss for any ideas for now.

    xoxo
