With St. Patrick's Day right around the corner, I'd like to share this poem.
The utterly impractical, never predictable,
Sometimes irascible, quite inexplicable, Irish.
Strange blend of shyness,
pride and conceit,
And stubborn refusal to bow in defeat.
He's spoiling and ready to argue and fight,
Yet the smile of a child
fills his soul with delight.
His eyes are the quickest to well up with tears,
Yet his strength is the strongest
to banish your fears.
His hate is as fierce as his devotion is grand,
And there is no middle ground
on which he will stand.
He's wild and he's gentle,
he's good and he's bad.
He's proud and he's humble,
he's happy and sad.
He's in love with the ocean,
the earth and the skies,
He's enamoured with beauty wherever it lies.
He's victor and victim, a star and a clod,
But mostly he's Irish—
in love with his God.
Sally,I love this poem, although I am not irish(except on St. Pattys day of course) it sums up my little irishman Jim perfectly! What a beautiful share!

Hi Sally - my parents lived in Dublin for a period of time and their neighbours and community were just so welcoming and friendly. God bless all on St Patricks Day. Take care, Judith
ReplyDeleteSally, Your poem is so great, the only thing that matters is that he is in love with God. Your cartoon is great, it made me smile once again thank-you for that.

ReplyDeleteSally... your little cartoons always make me smile...
ReplyDeleteI love your poem about the Irishman. Being half Irish, I can attest to the fact that the poem is a perfect depiction of an Irishman... it so reminds me of my great-Uncle Joe... my grandmother's brother.
The Irishman in Braveheart has always made me think of my Uncle Joe... and if you know that movie, and you apply this poem to that character... you'll see what I mean.
Ah... to be Irish is a wonderful blessing... Amen. Dixie
An excellent post today Sally. Enjoyed reading it.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Chris

Hi Sally, Cute one for your Sunday post (as usual)... Hope you had a good week. It's good to be home--but we did have a nice time (despite the weather). The waterfalls were flowing nicely--and that is good since sometimes there's not much water in the ones in Arkansas.
ReplyDeleteLove your Irish poem. I have some Irish in me (on my mother's side)--Scotch Irish to be exact. I love the music from Ireland--and their dancing. NEAT!!!
Have a great week.
Hugs,
Betsy
