Childhood Memories - Do You Remember?

45 rpm spindles - I look at this and think music.

Green Stamps - I saved enough books to get an iron and a camera!

Metal ice cubes trays with levers - Remember how hard you had to pull to get the ice out?

Beanie and Cecil, the Seasick Sea Serpent.

Roller-skate keys - Make it too tight, and you'll dent your shoes--too loose, and the skate falls off!

Marlin Perkins, host of the television program, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

Drive in Movies - One night, I got out of one guy's car and began walking home!

A & W Drive-in restaurants - Remember the frosty root beer?

Car Hops brought your order on roller skates to the driver's window, which was rolled down halfway.

Turquoise Studebakers

Topo Gigio on The Ed Sullivan Show (a reel-ly big shoe)

Washtub wringers - I got my arm caught in the ringer once! Mama turned the machine off and rescued me.

The Fuller Brush Man played by Red Skelton, comedian.

Fifteen cent McDonald hamburgers!

Five cent pack of baseball cards and you got gum too!

Penny candy - how much does it sell for now?

Twenty-five cents a gallon gasoline, and you got clean windshields!

Gum wrapper chains - use it as a bracelet or necklace.

Cigarettes for Christmas - Great gift idea! (cough, cough)

Burma Shave signs helped to make the car trip interesting.

Brownie camera - Mama made us face the sun to get a clear picture with this. Therefore, all my childhood pictures are of me squinting!

Flash bulbs - Remember how long you saw spots?

TV Test patterns - what we watched when no Television programs were on.

Do you remember most or all of these?

Barbara at Stray Thoughts shared this new award with me. It came with this message:

I pray that you will share this award with others who have touched your heart by sowing seeds of love into your life! They will know we are His by how we love one another!
I will place it on my sidebar with appreciation. I would like to pass it on to you if you comment here and are someone who shares His love.

  6. Hi Sally I just loved this trip down memory lane! I remember making gum wrapper chains with my friends. In my house with five kids the ice cube trays were always empty and none of us kids wanted to refill them at the sink and then balance them all drippy back to the freezer. Thanks for a fun post.

  7. This brought back a lot of pleasant memories for me. My older sister made a lot of gum wrapper chains, my dad still has his Brownie, and there is an A&W in Antwerp, Ohio where we still head occasionally for a chili dog. Thanks for posting. :)

  12. Oh how I remember all of those !!! I used to have a lot of the same items but through the years,of moving a few times, etc. I do not have any old items left--I really do not know what we did with them-probably trashed them thinking they are not any good anymore and would not be important to us down the road. Yes, I share the love of the Lord as well--could not make it without Him and with the days ahead of us , I think we will be depending and calling on Him more.

  16. Ok I admit I remember some of those. Although around here you can still get a car hop to bring you food if you stop in at a Sonic. ;)

Although the drive in movie is probably the one I miss the most. I only went to 2 but I have such fond memories of those 2 experiences I wish I could take my kids.

    Congrats on your award. :)

  17. Hi Sally, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane..look how easy things are today in our lives...Green back stamps were fun to collect, but took too many books to get something good!!The metal ice cube trays were hard to use and I would also drip water on the floor and in the freezer, placing them back inside of the ice box...Going to the drive-in movies was fun as a child, but too dangerous as a teenager!!!I loved penny candy... especially Mary Jane's..Have a great day. Baba

  19. Sally, I am distressed to say I remember all of those wonderful memories. OMG are we old or what? I am not going there. Thinking young is all there is to it. NOT!

Your post is outstanding finding all of those pics is amazing. Good job.

I do love roses and it comes from living in that old farm house I just posted. My grandmother had roses everywhere except one place. In the front yard down by the hwy. there was a huge circle of tiger lilies. A pear tree was in the middle of the yard and a huge black walnut tree on the left side of the house where a wooden seat was built in the tree where lightening split the tree. Where is all of that stuff now? such is life. Did I just write a book? You better critique it. LOL

    Hugs...Jeanne

  20. What a fun post! And thankfully read while I still remember those things, before I slip into "where are my glasses?" mode (they're on my face) or come home from buying the item we looked all over for here in the house, you know...the thing that mysteriously shows up after you buy the replacement.

  23. Neat post Sally!! I used to love A & W!! Their is one at the casino in CT but it's an hour away from us. That's a little far to drive for an egg cream or root beer float! Talk to you soon:)

  24. I received this in an e-mail once and used parts of it for a Thursday Thirteen. I do remember most of these! That frosty A&W mug was one of my favorite things.

I don't remember Beany and Cecil pr the mouse on Ed Sullivan (though I do remember the Ed Sullivan show), but I do remember most of the rest. Fun memories!!

  25. Girl, now I am having flash backs with my hot flashes! LOVE this post :)

  26. Well...if I admit to remembering most of them....will it show my age??? Oh wait the gray hair and wrinkles already does that! Yup I remember most of them!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I rmemebered them all except for Beany and Cecil, although they sounded familiar! Thankfully we still have a drive-in in our area so we were able to keep that tradition alive with our own kids - as a matter of fact, we sill make sure we go at least once every summer even though the girls are now 19 and 22!! It brings back good memories for everyone! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!...Donna

  29. I surely did enjoy your post today. Man oh man, do I ever remember those days! I licked enough green stamps to get my baby daughter's high chair and play pen back in 1974. Chewing gum wrapper chains that went on and on ....I would love to post the award on my blog. I am thankful to God for all the blessings I enjoy, and this is a sweet way to share the love of Jesus. God Bless You. Love, Faith

  30. Oh, the A&W rootbeer...that is one of my favorite childhood memories. And I also remember the flash light bulbs, and how you only got 4 uses out of them before it was all used up. Crazy to think about now!

  31. Help! I'm having a flash back and I can't stop! lol My sis used to make gum wrapper chains all the time and I totally remember having spindles for 45's. If you want curly hair (my post) then do it! Don't wait for it to come back into fashion. Be the trend setter. Woohoo!

  32. I have some of those little yellow disks. I saved all my "one hit wonders" from the early 1970's
and....do they have A&W's on the east coast? I thought they were a west coast thing? but good...really good root beer.
    this was fun Sal!

  38. Oh man... I remember every single one of these in one form or another. We didn't watch Ed or Red too often (we had one TV and Dad thought variety shows were just a little mindless -- "Go read a book!") -- so I don't really have clear memories of individual shows or characters from them... but I remember the shows themselves. But penny candy, 15 cent Mickey D's burgers, drive-ins (both the food and movie kind)... and gas for a quarter a gallon... yeah I remember all of those, though I have to say the lowest price I ever actually paid for gas was around 45 cents.

  45. Dear Sally, This is the funnest post yet. Or should I say most fun - whatever - I remember so many of these things, I was just telling Jacob about the green stamps, because there was a green stamp machine at the antique store. My Mom purchased a Corningware loaf pan with them and lo and behold just a few days ago we opened the cabinet and discovered it had cracked in half. Bummer! I used that every year at Thanksgiving to make the sweet potatoes. Now they will never taste the same.:( I could go on an on about your other pictures - thanks for the memories. ~ Robyn
PS I could go for some of those Sixlets right now. And thanks for the award :)

  46. I'm "only" 40, but I remember lots of these things. I used all my mom's and grandma's green stamps to outfit my dorm when I went off to college, and my first cameras had flashbulbs. My dad still uses a stereo w/ bulbs to play his 45s, 33s, and...78s!

    ReplyDelete
  47. OMG - I remember using a sponge to help my mom put the green stamps (and blue chips) inthe books.

I made a gum chain from all 4 corners of my bedroom (don't ask - I didn't chew all the gum)

A&W's the best one was in LaCrosse, WI when we would drive from Rochester, MN to Flushing, MI
