Television - Remember when?

Suzanne, my blogging buddy at Colorado Lady has a meme called Vintage Thingies Thursday. I usually participate in another Thursday meme, but today I'm joining in with VTT. If you have something vintage to post about, join in.

My family's first television was a Raytheon, black and white, of course.

You could hardly see for all the snow,
Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.
Pull a chair up to the TV set,
'Good Night, David. Good Night, Chet.'

Our Gang was such a treat to watch. I loved Spanky, and Darla was beautiful. She's not pictured here. Remember, she was the one with the dark curly hair?

Ralph used to ball us his fist and threaten to send Alice "to the moon." I knew he'd never hit her because every boy was taught that they should NEVER hit a girl.

Aw, Annette Funicello, how I envied her. She was so talented. She could sing and dance. Her personality is as beautiful as she.

The good old days when Batman was a hero. I can almost here the theme song.

Gene Autry before he sang Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer. Remember the name of his horse? Champion.

The folks who live in Mayberry. Good people. Good show. I guess Richie's eight here.

Barney, the inept deputy.

Lone Ranger, Silver, and Tonto is a show that PC people would not approve of today, but I liked it. Remember the silver bullet that the Lone Ranger always left behind?

George Reeves played Superman. Although I like the show, I enjoyed the comics more.

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and make sandwiches on the same cutting board with the same knife, but we never got food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND she used to eat it raw.

Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag.

A pager was the school PA system.

In school, we listened while the teacher read from the Bible, then prayed The Lord's Prayer, and sang the national anthem.

Remember school nurses? Ours wore a white hat and uniform.

When we got hurt, Mom pulled out the bottle of Mercurochrome--it didn't sting like iodine did.

  2. Hi Sally,

I really enjoyed taking a walk back in time with you! "The Andy Griffith Show" was, and still is, one of my all-time favorites! It's so refreshing to be able to watch it without being blasted with violence and vularity. You just can't find shows like that anymore. I used to LOVE "Gilligan's Island" and the "I Love Lucy" show.

I remember that we had only 4 channels...all the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) and PBS. Whenever my dad wanted to change channels, he couldn't use his remote (there wasn't one!)...I WAS HIS REMOTE! I bet I got up 15 times every evening to change channels! :)

Times sure have changed, haven't they?

We have one in every room now...we took our school lunch..my kids buy a gourmet lunch at school (far cry from what was served when we were kids) I dont think my sons could last a day in the world I was a kid in!!! Not to mention the electronics these days...God forbid they didnt have a cell phone and an ipod!

  4. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Sally. Many of the things you listed are good memories for me as well. My dad ate raw hamburger like your mom. Did you ever wonder how your mom folded that wax paper on your sandwich and it HELD? My sister and I were wondering the other day if we could even do it!

  5. I love all these old TV shows. They just don't have any now that compare in my opinion!

    Thanks for the memories!

  6. Morning, Sally. What a trip. I remember it all. I remember pretty little Darla singing "I'm In the Mood For Love" with her little girl voice and the forced vibrato. Now you left off my hero - Roy Rogers! Nothing like the old shows.
Be a sweetie and glad to be an inspiration to you! lol

  7. Such wonderful memories, Sally! Thank you for this post. I loved all of those shows, and a lot of the other westerns...

Gunsmoke, My Friend Flicka, Fury, Sky King, and Roy Rogers!

I dreamed of becoming Miss Kitty, but that never quite materialized. LOL! ;-)

    XO,

  8. Hi Sally!

Thanks for putting the button on your blog and for signing the FOCA petition! That makes us one step closer to saving these babies! :)

I also wanted to comment that your backyard looks a lot like mine. Where are you in FL? We're in Ft. Myers.

    Blessings,

  10. What wonderful memoreis of the good ole days! Loved Barney, he was my favorite...especially in "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken". That was my first "Scary" movie I ever watched. LOL

Things are sure different today, I miss the simple things of just a short time ago.

Great Post, Have a great weekend.

  11. We own all the Mayberry DVDs and watch at least one Andy every day. Keeps us humble. And that would be "Opie" not "Ritchie". Ron Howard was Ritchie in Happy Days. Sorry, I'm obsessive compulsive and that would have kept me awake tonight. :)

  12. Oh the Good Ole Days, Sally... Life seemed more simple then--and the TV shows were so much more entertaining then!!!!!

I was reading about them finding tainted peanut butter recently---and I wondered at the time how we made it through those days when, like you said, our mothers cut up chicken on the same cutting board as she cut up other things.. Seems like the smarter we get, the worse off we are. Ya think???

Somebody opened the freezer door in Tennessee. Our low this morning was 10 degrees. We've had some snow--but just a dusting. It's blowing around in the air mostly!!!

I gave my birdies some extra breakfast this morning!!!!
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  13. Where's Blondie and Dagwood? Oh how I loved Sunday afternoon Blondie which was followed with Ma&Pa Kettle. Oh course they were reruns but I can find neither one of those on DVD.

I DO remember having the black and white TV and my father telling us he was going out to get a color TV. He came back with some cheap plastic blue, red and green overlay that you adhered to the front of the screen.
I always turned it upside down :)

    Thanks for the trip Sally..

  16. Your right. Those old shows are so much better than that junk that's on tv nowadays. We don't watch too much tv at our house. And the Bible is still read. Thanks for sharing.

  17. What a fun trip down memory lane....I used to LOVE Batman and Robin..hehehe

Your mom used to eat "raw" hamburger meat? Sorry, but that seems like it would taste nasty.

  18. Thanks for the trip! My parents did not have a TV until several years after I left home, and Bob and I didn't buy one for a couple of years. Were we deprived? I remember my Mother's cutting board - I know I would cringe now, and she was a meticulous housekeeper. Sally

  19. I was stolling down memory lane sweetly remembering all you were describing (except the school nurses-ours didn't have to wear the uniform) and then came the mercurochrome. I am still laughing. My mum put it on everything that she could. I wore a pinkish tatoo for days.

  20. OOOO, Sally....what a wonderful trip down memory lane. I loved all those shows on TV, too.
We used to lick the bowl and the spoon when MOM made cakes and cookies..never one time thinking of the raw eggs..eggs were much fresher back then..maybe that's why they didn't kill us..!
    GREAT POST !!

  22. Hi Sally
I LOVED this post!! I remember watching those shows as a little one. I'd forgotten and this was so nice to see and remember them.

I know we have very important people out there taking care of us...so we don't get hurt...or sick..so we do this and don't do that. We used to be able to look after ourselves before didn't we?? So much to think about... I found this sooo interesting.

    Thank you for sharing
    have a nice day

  23. Great post Sally! I remember all of these television shows as well. Our first television was a black and white RCA...it had a big cabinet and was like a piece of furniture...with rabbit ears! Those were the days!

  24. Yes, well that about sums my childhood up! Thank you, I think! :) When we look back like this, I can't help but stop and wonder what my children will remember and how they will remember it. ~Kelly

  25. This post brought back a lot of memories for me. We didn't get a TV until right after I graduated from high school. My folks couldn't afford it but I did watch a little TV at other people's houses. I remember listening to the Lone Ranger on the radio when I was a kid. I also remember Inner Sanctum and the squeeky door. And, of course, there was Oxydol's own Ma Perkins. I liked Amos & Andy too.
We got married a few days after you did. Ours was 7-11.

  26. Hi Sally,

I just sent you an e-mail. I just found your blog and will come back and read more. In my e-mail, I mentioned 'Queen for a Day'. Everyone remember that? All those sad stories, and the winner got to have the crown on her head, the dozen roses, and a stole? (not sure). Remember the 'applause-o-meter'? It had to be rigged!! Sally, thank you for being a Christian, it just warms my heart and I think we could be friends. Hey, what about 'My Little Margie'---that one was a LONG time ago--in the 50's. I was in kindergarten and would come home at noon and watch with my mom Ah, the memories. Thanks for a great post. I'll look for the 'FOCA'petition/button--not quite sure what it looks like. Please feel free to stop by my blog, you're probably like me--on the computer nearly all day reading blogs--I've got to get something done!

  27. Lovely thoughts from the past. My Mom looked like Annette Funicello and I loved Micky Mouse Club at 3 pm every afternoon. As far as Andy and Barney I have all the episodes on DVD and they are our favorite camping entertainment.

  28. Hi Sally!
Thanks for the memories. You forgot The Dick Van Dyke Show!! That was my favorite. I always wanted to grow up and work in an office with people like Buddy & Sally! Be careful what you wish for...
Back in my day my mother made bread. She let it rise in the warmest room in the house-the bathroom! Hee Hee!

  32. Sally this is such a great walk down memory lane. I remember so many of the same television shows growing up. My grandma used to feed me raw hamburger too. It's so fun to go back in memory to visit those simpler times....

  34. Ah yes.. times have changed...
I work with food.. and I am amazed how picky people are over food these days!!!
If a chicken has been laying in the heating cabinet for a couple of hours people will ask if it's grilled today?
Would we sell yesterdays food as a hot meal today?? I don't think so!!

    Have a great weekend!

  36. I guess that this really shows our age, but....I remember all of those and loved them. I also watch Andy Griffith everyday. Have to have my daily dose of Barney!! We used to watch the Jetsons cartoon and dream about things like pushing a button and having our meal instantly. Now we have microwaves. We never went to the doctor either. Mom always treated us at home and guess what..we did not die or lose a limb. We were too poor to go to the doctor. Good memories.

  37. Raw Hamburger - GROSS. I wish I could remember stuff from my childhood, but alas, those memories were wiped out.
Sal - I got my book today. I had forgotten all about it. It was so much fun getting a goodie in the mail. Thank you so very much!

    Blessings to you!

  40. Sally, this was so much fun to go down memory lane! I hadn't thought about some of these shows in years, and I loved all of them. Those rabbit ears were a lot of trouble, but we sure thought they were a great invention! laurie

  41. Hello Sally, I think your post today is awesome. What memories this conjures up right now. Those were truly the good old days. Your photos are perfect. The vintage theme was great. A very fun post for those of who are old enough to remember.

    Hugs...Jeanne

  42. I do remember many of those! We had a black and white TV with rabbit ears, and there was a long tube in the back we'd have to take out and replace from tome to time.

  43. Lovely things to remember... I loved Sky king and his neice Penny I think. Good times.

  44. I love the Andy Griffith show, we watch it everyday on TV land. Barney is my favorite, he's great! And I remember eating raw hamburger, too! It didn't taste that bad with a little salt. I couldn't imagine doing it now.

  45. I love all those shows you mentioned. I'm only 41 and never had to watch them on a black and white TV but I love them all and prefer watching black and white shows to todays skanky full color ones. hee We don't have cable or satalite at our home and haven't for 11 years now. We rent Netflix and buy DVD's of the old shows. My kids love Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy, Gomer Pyle, etc. just as much as I do. Thanks for the great post!
