I have a cousin, Marilyn, who has always been my favorite. She's eleven years older than I, and never seemed to mind whenever I was a pest. When I was five years old, I kept kissing her while she tried to put on her makeup for a date. I'm sure it was irritating, but she wouldn't say a word. Finally, my mother scolded, "Now, Sally, let Marilyn alone!"
I stuck out my lower lip and said, "I YUST wanted her to tie my bow!" Everyone laughed at that lie, and it turned into one of those family sayings.
Marilyn is the kindest person I know. She's standing on the porch of the house where I was born. At that time, it was my grandparents' home. Marilyn and her family owned it after our grandparents died. It stayed in the family for decades, but now it's owned by someone outside the family.
Marilyn lives way too far away in another state, and I don't see her very often. However, I think of her almost every day when I see this display of flowers.
When we moved into this house thirteen years ago, Marilyn and her husband came for a visit, along with his two sisters. During the visit, I described what I wanted in this spot. (Of course, I never thought that she was going to do this for me!) When she got home, she hunted until she found just the right container--this sweet white pitcher. (I wanted a white pitcher with plain lines, filled with soft pastel Pink flowers.) Then, she commissioned a florist to create this special assortment and had this beauty sent to me. It was exactly what I had envisioned!
Aren't they beautiful? For all these years, I've kept them here, except for Thanksgiving through Christmas. I look at this arrangement and think of Marilyn.

See you for Blue Monday!
Good morning! I'm here to see your show and tell, but I have to say how beautiful this arrangement is. I just love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd your sweet memories behind it make it a treasure! Great photos!
PS-Your opening "P" paragraph gave me a giggle--very clever!:)
Happy Saturday!

Nice story about your cousin. She is a sweetie. The house looked so cozy and nice and the number 148 sounds like in cantonese "sure to prosper". Any number with 8 is favourite among cantonese. :) Happy Pink Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet Sally.. Marilyn must really be someone very special. I'm sure she'll appreciate the PINK flowers.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have trouble with deer in our yard because we use "Liquid Fence". It's a spray which won't hurt anything (or them)--but they don't like it and therefore stay away. Tell your sister to go online and google "Liquid Fence". It really does work.
Have a great day.
Hugs,
Betsy
I love your pitcher of flowers, and I love your story about it. What a thoughtful person Marilyn is, and how wonderful that you had such a kind and patient older cousin when you were growing up. laurie

What a great story---I hope Marilyn gets to read it!!! She was so thoughtful to purchase that pitcher, then have it filled with such a lovely arrangement.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the photos taken in businesses---I always ask permission (well, almost always! :) Typically, folks don't pay one bit of attention--unless it's a small boutique or shop. I ALWAYS get permission from a place such as that. They're usually glad to have the free advertising if I link them on my blog.
Happy Pink Sat! Dana

This is so beautiful! I'm really getting into pink just now. I decided to do my kitchen in rose and chocolate colors. It's a bit of a challenge, as primary colors are still the majority of things I see. Although, a visit to the resale shop today was rewarded with a nice little pitcher.
ReplyDeleteThose roses in your white pitcher look so fresh. Love it.
Thanks for visiting my blog.

ReplyDeleteHi Sally I'm playing catch up today. Saturday is always a hard day for making comments. It is always extra busy.
ReplyDeleteYour story about your cousin is soooo sweet. She is very attractive. It is neat that she lived in the house where you were born. Too bad you don't get to see her very much. The flowers and container are lovely and I know she loves you very much. I too have a cousin Marilyn. She is my age though. I have talked about her in previous posts. She comes to visit for about 10 days every year. She will be here soon. in fact.
Hugs...Jeanne
