When I was a child--back in the covered wagon days--Halloween was a carefree holiday where we dressed in fun, happy costumes and got free candy. No decorations were necessary, and it did not cost much to participate. I don't ever remember being scared.
We had little if any money, and Mama would sew costumes for me, my twin brother, and my younger sister. I remember one year, using an orange and white checkered piece of material, my brother and I went as Jack and Jill. She simply made a skirt for me and a pair of pants for my brother. We wore our own white shirts! (Mama was quite creative and a good "salesperson"! She could convince us that the costumes she'd made were special.)
Betty Rubble from the Flintstones is my kinda costume! Look at all of that lovely blue!
Costumes were no more scary than this blue pirate costume.
If anyone was a ghost, they would be a friendly one, flying through the blue sky.
I really don't like scaring small children.
Matter of fact, I'd rather laugh.

We live in a small town and Halloween has always been fun for us because I had little children or Granchildren to Trick or Treat with....but dang, they are all growing up so this year, Grandma has no one to Trick or Treat with! So, guess I'll just stay home and enjoy the little ones that come to the door. Have a Happy Halloween.

Halloween took on a totally different meaning when I was growing up. It has gotten out of control and too dangerous for treat or treat anymore. Sally, you find some of the best images and cartoons. You never disappoint us with your Blue Mondays. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I did not visit as many on Saturday as I normally do. Therefore, I messed you. Sorry, but I did enjoy your post for that day.

This was a nice post, Sally. I agree with you ... it seems Halloween was a lot more fun with little pirates and friendly ghosts and witches than with vampires and scary monsters.

I always thought Halloween was fun, too. I remember one year a neighbor made corn fritters and hot apple cider. Now, parents would be afraid to let their children have something like that.
Love your blue post Sally. I agree 100%. Somewhere along the line it became a scary event. My grands go to our Main Street and their Church for Halloween Trick or Treat and a party. I loved having a good laugh this morning. Thanks
My parents went back and forth on whether they would let us trick or treat. One year my cousin was visiting from Michigan. She talked me into dressing up (with items from my parents closet) and climbing out the window to walk to the nearest town and trick or treat. We got into a bit of trouble over that one!

What a great post. My Mom made all of my costumes and I made all of my 2 son's costumes.
My favorite one was when I went as my Dad. He was a carpenter and built houses. I used his green dickey work pants, a flannel shirt of his and a baseball cap, tied a tool belt around my waist, complete with tools,stuffed his work boots with newspaper so they would fit me and my mom got me a fake mustache ( he had a real one) and I pretended I was smoking a cigar like he always did! He was honored that I wanted to look and be like him and to this day , I still say with great pride that I am a carpenter's daughter and my Daddy taught me well!

Well done Sally! I made my kids costumes too and the best ever was a Hersey's Kiss... it won the prize at their school. I must have used two entire boxes of Reynolds wrap on that one!
Good morning Sally...your costumes reminded me of the gypsy costumes we would wear when we were kids. An oversized skirt, puffy blouse and lots of chains and jewelery. Then of course there was the white sheet with the eyes cut out and the hobo costume with the sooty faces. Things sure are different today!

Good morning Sally, My company just left for Florida in the pouring rain. Sigh. What I really want is a long nap. We have had countless people in our home every day and night since last Weds. Lots of good times, but time to myself is a blessing this morning.
I like your blues and your story about your mom making your costumes. I too made costumes for my children. Stuff from my sewing trunk and lots of make shift costumes too. Like a ghost made from a pillowcase etc. Nothing elaborate just fun silly stuff. Not like today. But that's ok too.
I saw your Pink Sat. post and it is so cute. I am so glad you are a cancer 'survivor' and that we are friends. Smile.

I agree..no need to scare small children. I like Fall festival or harvest atmosphere and the delight of candy. I only need to be scared that my crew eats all my fav candy before I get ahold of the bowl. lol
When I was a kid, my favorite costumes were always gypsies or clowns. Not very scary, and it probably says something very disturbing about my personality. But I love that Betty Rubble outfit! I might have to get one of those for this year!

When we were on the farm I grew up on I can remember Mama and Daddy lettin' in a clan of people all dressed up. They sat in the living room as Mom and Dad tried to guess who they were. After sittin' there for quite sometime they got up and left without a word. In today's world they would never get in! :o)

I'm with you about scaring small kids. Fooey. And simple costumes are good costumes. Aside from not seeing too well out of cut-out eye holes, a sheet over your head was a very good ghost!
When my girls were younger, I made most of their costumes, too. I'm convinced it makes for more lasting memories.

LOL! Sally, I love that cartoon. And shhhh... I really don't like Halloween. No, I don't. Can we just skip it and go straight to Thanksgiving??? I know, I'm a Scrooge, but I don't like scary things and things that go bump in the night. ;-)

I can identify with what you are writing. My mother used to help me with my costumes also. That was part of the fun! I was once 1/2 man and 1/2 lady...I had a skirt on one side and pants on the other. Kids used to be able to trick or treat on their own around my side of town...we didn't have to be afraid of crazy things happening or scarey decorations.
We only had a pumpkin. It was great fun!
Then as always things become so commercial...I enjoy all the Hallowe'en I see on blogs and driving around...but its different.
