Today my Blue report is sad.You may have seen this story on the news.
This past week, a tragedy happened about thirty miles from my home--in Seffner, Florida when a sinkhole opened up inside the Blue house pictured. A thirty-six-year-old man was in his bed when the ground below swallowed him along with his bed and the entire room!
When his brother, in the next room, heard a loud noise, he hurried to help; however, only a corner of the mattress showed. Emergency workers were called, but no trace of the man was ever found. He is presumed dead. The outside of the house appears normal. No cracks or soft spots in the ground. Meanwhile, the sinkhole keeps enlarging.
The remaining members of the family escaped unharmed. The houses on either side have been temporary declared unsafe, and their families have now moved out.
Sunday morning, the Blue house was deemed unsafe, and as of this report, has been partially destroyed. The crane operator took great care to save some items for the family. (A picture of grandparents, the family Bible, some toys, some clothing...) Tomorrow, the demolition will be completed. There are more photos at Eyewitness News.

I have kept up with this as it is so unusual. Maybe not there, but I think it is horrible being buried alive so to speak. I thought of you immediately even tho I knew you did not live near there. I definitely would not live there if it was a known fact this could happen. Sad and tragic thing. You take care.

Sorry about this tragedy. Here's hoping the remaining family members are comfortable in their new home. As to the question, perhaps I'd scramble to save the photo albums... or whatever the hands could carry :(

The sinkhole is just unthinkable. I didn't realize it was close to your area. That poor family. The diagram as to how this can happen was very interesting. Thank you for sharing this and I agree, it is soooo sad.

I did hear about this on the news....so sad. I just can't imagine.
My most treasured possessions would be family photos, notes and little things from my children when they were little, a few notes from my mom, now passed on.
We've heard about it in Sweden, too. Terrible, horrible and luckily quite unusual. I'm happy to know my house is on solid rock ground!

Yes, we saw this tragic story on the news and it's so difficult to process that this could ever happen, to be swallowed in the earth. Our hearts and prayers go out for the family through this most difficult time. Thank you for the photos and diagram, Sally. I am feeling a bit blue but when we're evacuated from wildfires here, I always bring family photos with me. They're close to my heart.

I've been watching this story on the news. It is so sad and so scary that they can't find a trace of that poor man.
Living in "earthquake country" we always have a plan in place of what we would rescue. It includes all of our important papers and documents, our family photos, our computers which are our back up of all of our important things, my jewelry and a few sentimental items.
This has been a horrific story! What a tragedy for this man and his family. My heart breaks!

Oh we have been watching this on the news. I'm sure they felt so hopeless just wondering how far he had fallen. The picture of his father holding his mother just is almost to hard to see.

Such a tragic story. We hear of the occasional sinkhole here in the Midwest, but it's usually out in the wide open spaces somewhere. This story is almost impossible to comprehend.

HI Dear Sally! Oh, this is just so sad. When I first heard about this I thought it sounded like a horror movie but it was real! I have heard of sink holes but I guess I've never heard of it sucking up a room and someone. So terrible. Hope you're doing well and I always love to hear from you. I have been following this story, such a shame, the man was so young. I read a little while ago that another smaller sinkhole was found a few miles away from this one. I had never heard of a sinkhole before, do they occur a lot in your area (on a smaller scale)? Thanks for the diagram, it made it all more clear.
