Isn't it funny how we fall into habits--comfortable habits? Johnny bounces out of bed at 5:00--every morning--without any alarm clock! He's learned to be quiet. The poor man married someone who believes that morning does not happen until the sun comes up and then, comes up slooowly and quietly. Shh.
All of my working life, I climbed out of bed at 5:30 in order to make it to work on time. High school teachers must report early. It is said that you will adapt. Well, I never got used to it.
Now, if left alone, I get up around 7:30 and head for my Mac computer. Johnny makes a fresh pot of coffee and brings me a cup. Ah, yes, I AM spoiled!
It should be no surprise that at night, Johnny is often ready to go to sleep much before I am. He's worn out.
Where I live, today is the first day of school for this year 2008-2009. It's a couple of days late because of Tropical Storm Fay. I won't be going, and I'm a little saddened by that fact.
As a child, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. But, I married shortly after graduating from high school at age seventeen. (I skipped fourth grade.) When my two children married, I enrolled in college, keeping my dream of teaching alive. Four years later, degree in hand, I began to teach. I am one of those fortunate enough to live my childhood dream! I taught high school for many years. People used to tell me I had courage to teach in high school. Not so--it was pure joy. I loved teaching! It's not an easy job, but it's a rewarding one.
I know that on the first day of school, parents and students are anxious; teachers are too. I don't know of any of my colleagues who ever got a good night's sleep before the first day. Exciting times await! Today is a good day to pray for your child and for your child's teacher. It should be a very good year.
Do you have memories of the first day of school?
PS The powers that be removed this video from yesterday. It's too good to miss! There's a sport called kite surfing. You grab a bar that is attached to a giant kite and strap yourself on. Here's an example of why you should NOT do this during a tropical storm. Notice, please, the other people on the beach who are not blown away.
The foolish fellow is in critical condition in a local hospital. I'm sure the sand in his mouth will remain for awhile.
Shh! There's just something about dogs and cats sleeping that makes us go, "Ahhh." I've numbered the pictures to help you choose. Which one is your favorite?
"Sleeping like a baby" is an expression used--well, for babies; I know that mine could sleep through the house being bombed.
I used to sleep eight to nine hours a night. As I age, I've discovered that there are nights that my twitchy legs don't want to stay still long enough for me to sleep. Other times, I'm snoozing along and my legs will decide it's the perfect time to wake up and dance! For instance, have you ever HEARD of a charley horse in the ankle that will not quit? Well, now you have!
When my legs persistently act up, I get up and go into the office so that Johnny's sleep won't be interrupted. There's no sense in both of us being awake. I am grateful for my computer during those nights.
I found this little quiz, "Do You Get Enough Sleep?" I took it, and here are my results in blue:
You Sometimes Don't Get Enough Sleep You're often more tired than you'd like, and you're probably not getting enough quality sleep. Sleeping a little more could make you a lot more energetic and happy. Try having a bedtime, keep your bedroom cool, and only eat fruit before bed.
Click on the words below, take the quiz, and please come back and share with me what you've discovered about your sleep needs. Meanwhile, I'm taking a nap!
