Pink Saturday - Mama's Dish

I want to take a minute to ask my fellow Bloggers to pray for those affected by Hurricane Ike. We don't yet know the extent of damages, but we do know that a great many people have been displaced. I know that God is good and that He hears the prayers of His people.

Beverly at how sweet the sound hosts Pink Saturday. If you'd like to see other pink things, visit Beverly.

My mother gave me this week's offering many years ago. This dish was given to my mother by Aunt Betty, the second wife of my mom's Uncle Charlie. His first wife purchased it, and when she died, he later married Aunt Betty. Not immediately, you understand!

Now, Aunt Betty, like most of us ladies, wanted nothing of wife number one in the house, so Mama was lucky enough to get some goodies, and this beautiful pedestal bowl eventually got passed down to me. While Mama had it, she kept it in a china cabinet and never used it. It was "too precious," she said.

There are not many things I keep just to look at, and for years I have used it to for my fruit bowl. Money Saving Tip: I keep fake fruit mixed with real fruit in the bowl. That way, I can purchase small amounts of fruit, and it's eaten before it goes bad. No waste! Money saved!

As usual, I had a hard time photographing it. I took a shot on my white kitchen table. This gives you a true idea of the color.

Next, I tried to show the pedestal look of it from the side. This dark green tablecloth showed it best.

Finally, a dark blue towel was used underneath so that I could show you the design of the engravings on the dish.

What is your opinion about special things? Use them or tuck them safely away?

Beautiful dish, Sal...Happy PINKness Day!!!

I use all my "special" things. As far as I'm concerned, the more I use them, the more I love them.

Thank you for your kind mention of all of the people affected by Hurriane Ike. I do believe in the power of prayer.

Sally, that dish is very beautiful. I love the scalloped edges and the etching. I also love your story of how it became yours. Your photos are good, showing all of the fine features. I would use this dish with care. It is too pretty to hide in a china cabinet some where.

Hugs...Jeanne

I am exercising my leg off. It is paying off too. I walk without aid and can probably drive again after three weeks. Thanks for all of your good advice. :)

I use to say tuck them... but now I'm moving towards using them every once in a while for something special. It's no fun to just tuck away.... USE IT! Just be careful. :) LOL xoxo, Joanna

Glassware is extremely difficult to photograph, but you captured the color and design. I say USE IT, unless it is so irreplaceable that you would be devastated at it's loss.

BTW, Congrats on winning the Gift Certificate ~ I've emailed you but just in case, wanted to let you know!

Happy Pink Saturday,
Crystal

Your dish is beautiful and I'm glad you shared the story. I hate to admit it, but I have dishes that are just too precious to use. I keep them displayed like works of art, just to enjoy. Have a happy pink Saturday!

I love that dish and I love the story that goes with it! I vote--use it! I am guilty of keeping "special stuff" in a safe spot, but the older I get, the more I realize I don't have that much time left to enjoy them. So, YES, use it!
Hope your Pink Sat. is a great one! Dana

Your pink dish is beautiful. Such a lovely, soft pink. I just love dishes like that. You are very lucky to have and the story and memory behind it. Its so nice to have beautiful pieces that you can really use and enjoy. Thank you for sharing. It really looks so different with the different cloth colours too...

I hope the people in Texas and in the other storm areas are feeling the prayers being sent to them...and keeping them strong and feeling positive that all things will once again become calm. This has been a terrible storm.

We should enjoy our lovely day.

Happy Pink Saturday, Sally.

Your pictures of your treasure are fantastic. I definitely like to have things that are special to me out where I can see and use them. This is a wonderful piece, and I'm so glad it belongs to you.

Happy Pink Saturday! What a beautiful pink bowl and what a great suggestion about the fruit. I am guilty of saving things and not using them as often as I should, you know, maybe once at the holidays. Prayers are being said as we speak for our Gulf coaster friends, Hope you have a good day ~ Robyn

Lovely dish. "Use them or tuck them away?" gosh - my brain says "use them." but in reality, so many of my lovely things remain on the shelf and I use everyday things. Maybe your post will make me think a little more about it, and take those things off the shelf!

Yes - another hurricane. Thinking of all those in it's path.

I talked to my mom in E.Texas this morning. She lost power this morning, but so far everything else is OK. I hope the power will be restored soon - fortunately she has old-fashioned telephones, so she can be called.

Best wishes!

Your pink pedestal dish is gorgeous. And the tip about mixing real fruit with faux fruit is a great idea!

I say use that special item instead of putting it away.

That's a beautiful bowl and my opinion is to use it gently. Always hand wash it. Someone commented on my blog today about how her mom was afraid to use her fine china so she tucked it away in storage and then someone came in and stole it all so she never used it or enjoyed it...

I'd say use them. When it comes to possessions, I'm not much of a sentimentalist though.

Ooh, that's so pretty! I love that you use it, and treasure it too. I have what very few things I have from my grandmother packed up, "saving" them. Sigh, if I had room, I'd like to think I'd have them out and try to use them.

I wonder... is that pretty dish what my mother often called "depression glass"? It looks like some she has, but in another color, I think. My mother was the least sentimental person that has ever lived, and she got rid of most everything of hers and her moms and other family members, including hand-made quilts that I would give my right arm for. Sigh. I think that may be another reason I don't have much or use it, I'm too afraid :)

Great post and lovely photos!

Love this pink dish. I like it best on the white. I have several pink pieces. I started collecting pink depression glass before it got expensive. I just recently put our sterling silver flatware in the drawer with the stainless stuff. For years it has just been used for special occasions. It just dawned on me I'm not going to have that many more special occasions. Now we use it every day and enjoy it.

Special things??? I use them! Life is too short NOT to.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and giving me such a nice compliment on my ticket bowls.

I made over 100 of those bowls earlier this year for a lady that owns a theatre production company in New York. She saw my bowls in my etsy shop and contacted me. Her company name is *Admit One*!

Using them in special occasions is my habit.
This your pink dish should be for seeing all the time :)
( Sorry my poor English! We had to learn in school at first Swedish, then German and later English and Latin. So we did never learn any of those languages properly, we did not even practice speaking in those days. Now our young people speak English well, my grandchildren start to learn English at nine years old. Two of them were in English kindergarten.)

Have a happy Sunday !

Smiling Hello Sally:)
As far as photographing, it gives us many opportunities as you did here, and we can pick really interesting shots from different angles. Did you know this blogging work helped me to discover my photo taking ability in me that I really hadn't know until today.
To me, your dish w/ the dark background seems amazing.
If it's such a great piece as much as your plate then I'd keep it safely for a special occasion. I can't use it daily:)
Have a happiest of Happy Pink Weekend. Thanks a lot for your kind visit to my home and yr kind comment, too.

That's a beautiful compote Sally and I really like your idea of mixing the fake fruit with the real fruit because I do end up throwing out fruit that goes bad before it gets eaten. Happy belated Pink Saturday.
